Making Fairy Cakes

In the story “Fearne saves Sorrel”, Fearne gives her fairy friend some of her birthday cake. Fairies love cake. If you leave a little piece of it on the kitchen table overnight they will eat it. Fairies eat in a magical way. They eat the flavor and the goodness from the food. It will still be there in the morning but the fairies will have eaten an invisible part of it. Would you like to make some fairy cakes for your family?
You will need:
125g (4.5oz) softened butter
125g (4.5oz) caster sugar
1tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
150g (5oz) self raising flour
Special ingredient – LOVE
For the filling:
Step One:
- Ask an adult to preheat the oven to 190ºC, 375ºF, gas 5. Line a 12-hole fairy cake tin with paper cases.
Step Two:
Mix the butter, sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl and beat until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Step Three:
Add the eggs, one at a time, beating continuously, then sift in the flour.
Step Four:
Divide the mixture evenly between the paper cases. Ask an adult to put into the oven
Step Five:
Cook in the oven for 8-12 minutes, or until golden and springy to the touch. Transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool.
Step Six:
When cooled, cut the top off each cake, and then cut the tops in half to make the fairy wings.
Step Seven:
Set aside. Spread jam on the top of the cut cake, then spoon the cream on top of the jam
Step Eight:
Arrange two fairy wings at an angle on top of each cake. Decorate with silver balls or similar.
